At Coppermill we take the Climate Emergency seriously and sustainability and a commitment to making our community a greener space is at the heart of everything we do at the school. In 2023, we became the first school in the borough to create a Sustainability Strategy and a Sustainability Action Plan (see both documents below). These documents outline our vision and aims as well as the actions we will be taking as a school to ensure we are working together as community to fight climate change.
One of the major projects we have undertaken on our sustainability journey so far, is the revamping of our school grounds in line with our sustainability policy and to bring more green space, plants and trees into our school. In the past two years we have transformed our existing peace garden space and installed a brand new, award winning, rain garden in our KS2 playground.
For the revamp of our peace garden we worked alongside Meristem, an ecologically minded design company, who helped us transform an existing space on our school site into a multi purpose growing space, complete with fruit trees, wildflower meadows, planters for fruit and vegetables and even a mural designed and painted by local graffiti artist Hixxy. The space was officially opened with a launch evening on World Wetlands Day.
This year, we have made further developments to our school grounds with the installation of our Rain Garden. This incredible space was deisgned by one of our parents, John Howlett, for the RHS garden show Malvern 2025. After the show, John nominated our school to receive the garden and worked tirelessly alongside the sponsors Flood:Re to transport and install the garden in our playground. The garden is an oasis of tranquility complete with water feature, seating and a vast array of trees and plants. It also offers sustainable drainage solutions thanks to its design which enables rain water to be collected in a swale which filters water to the plants. The garden was officially opened by Stella Creasey in September and we look forward to seeing our children benefitting from it both as a quiet space to use at break and lunch, but also as an outdoor classroom to be used throughout the year. Please see pictures above and below of this incredible new space!
