At Coppermill, our chosen MFL is Spanish. We introduce Spanish in Years 1 and 2 through songs and games, before children in KS2 begin working from our Spanish scheme of work devised by the Primary Languages Network. Primary Languages Network provides a clear, progressive and engaging approach to language learning across the primary years. The scheme gives children regular opportunities to listen, speak, read and write in Spanish, while building their confidence and enjoyment of learning another language. Lessons are practical and interactive, using songs, games, stories, rhymes and real-life contexts to make Spanish accessible and memorable for all learners. The carefully sequenced programme also ensures that children revisit and build on their knowledge as they move through the school.
Through Primary Languages Network, children develop a growing vocabulary and understanding of Spanish pronunciation, sentence structures and grammar, learning how to communicate about topics such as themselves, their families, school, hobbies, food, places and everyday life. They will also develop their understanding of Spanish-speaking countries and cultures, helping them to appreciate similarities and differences between their own lives and those of children in other communities. By the end of primary school, our aim is for children to have a strong foundation in Spanish, the confidence to communicate in simple Spanish and, most importantly, a curiosity and enthusiasm for continuing to learn languages in the future.
